Akaroa is situated on the Banks Peninsula of the South Island of New Zealand. First settled by the French in the 19th century before the British officially claimed New Zealand. Even today you find the main streets retain their French heritage and some of the early forms of architecture. The boutique shops and businesses along Rue Lavaud, Rue Jolie and the waterfront provide a wide range of goods and services. Akaroa has a cluster of fine restaurants along the waterfront. The food in the township features local salmon, crayfish, beef, venison and lamb.
