Travel the inland roads from Christchurch or Ashburton through the Canterbury plains, the largest area of flat land in New Zealand. Dwarfed by the huge Southern Alps is Methven, a popular winter resort and gateway to nearby Mount Hutt ski field.
Aside from skiing and snowboarding, the area is also a great base for fishing, jetboating, hiking or mountain biking. Head further towards the Alps and explore the vast riverbed of the Rangitata River valley—Mount Sunday can be seen from the unpaved road near the entrance to Mount Potts Station. And if you really want the best view of all, glide over the whole area in a hot air balloon. Magic!
